High-Reliability, Zero-Impact Mobile Telemetry & Black-Box Flight Recorder for Flutter #
Package: telemetry_flight_recorder

Platform Support: Flutter Android, iOS, macOS, Linux, Windows, Web
1. Executive Summary & Zero-Impact Philosophy #
Telemetry Flight Recorder is an in-memory, privacy-preserving mobile telemetry engine designed to provide 100% deterministic flight-data recording of user sessions leading up to crashes, network anomalies, or business logic failures.
Like an aircraft flight data recorder, it continuously retains an in-memory rolling buffer of recent application breadcrumbs, device state context, network traces, and encrypted storage snapshotsβflushing them automatically on crashes, app lifecycle transitions, or periodic intervals.
The "Minus-Zero Impact" Law: #
Under no circumstances may the Flight Recorder degrade user experience, cause frame drops (jank), block the main UI thread, or introduce crash regressions:
- Cold-Start Overhead = 0.00 ms: Initialization runs asynchronously via non-blocking microtasks.
main()andrunApp()execute without delay. - Isolate Isolation: Network dispatches are fire-and-forget using
unawaited(). No blocking synchronous network calls exist in the UI isolate. - Bounded Memory Ceiling: Logs reside in an in-memory sliding circular buffer capped at 100 entries (~80 KB RAM max). Low-end devices will never suffer Out-Of-Memory (OOM) events from logging.
- Hardware Hang Immunity: Hardware Keystore daemons (Android Keystore / iOS Keychain) are guarded by an aggressive 800ms hardware timeout barrier. If the OS daemon hangs, the engine safely recovers without blocking the application thread.
- Preservation of Existing Observability: Flutter error hooks chain onto existing crash reporting handlers (such as Firebase Crashlytics or Sentry) rather than overwriting them.

3. Subsystem Deep-Dive #
3.1 LogBuffer: Time-Indexed Sliding Circular Memory Queue #
- Uses an internal fixed-capacity buffer with a hard ceiling (
maxBufferSize, default: 500, recommended: 100). - When
add(entry)is invoked at capacity, it evicts the oldest entry in $O(1)$ (_buffer.removeAt(0)). - Zero Duplication via Atomic Slicing: When a flush occurs,
prepareSlice(flushEpoch)extracts a clean copy of logs captured between_lastSentEpochMsandflushEpoch. drain(flushEpoch)purges only the sent logs and advances the water-mark pointer, reclaiming memory immediately.
3.2 StorageSnapshotter: Hardware-Guarded Snapshot Engine #
- Keystore / Keychain Protection:
Operating systems (especially customized Android OEM ROMs) can occasionally deadlock when reading secure storage during app lifecycle transitions.
StorageSnapshotterenforces an explicit 800ms timeout:
If the hardware daemon hangs, it catchesfinal rawMap = await _secureStorage.readAll().timeout(keystoreTimeout);TimeoutExceptionand injects{"_warning": "KEYSTORE_TIMEOUT_800MS"}into the snapshot without blocking the app. - Prefix Sanitization: Automatically strips engine prefixes (e.g.
flutter.) from persistent storage keys.
3.3 MaskingEngine: Automated PII & Credential Sanitizer #
- Dictionary Matcher: Automatically masks any key matching:
The value is replaced with(token|auth|password|passwd|secret|pin|otp|aadhaar|pan|cvv|ssn|private|credential)***. - Sensitive Header Redaction:
Automatically masks
authorization,x-auth-token,x-access-token,x-refresh-token,x-hmac-signature, andx-message. - String Length Barrier: Truncates any non-sensitive string longer than 512 characters to prevent payload inflation.
3.4 GzipPusher: Non-Blocking Network Pipeline #
- Compression Ratio: Encodes raw UTF-8 JSON into binary Gzip format directly in memory. Achieves ~70% to 80% payload size reduction (a 12 KB log set shrinks to $\approx 2.4\text{ KB}$).
- Fire-and-Forget Contract: Schedules HTTP POST onto the microtask queue. All exceptions (DNS errors, connection refused, 401s, 500s) are caught and silently swallowed.
4. Complete API Reference #
4.1 Initialization: FlightRecorder.init() #
import 'package:telemetry_flight_recorder/telemetry_flight_recorder.dart';
void main() async {
WidgetsFlutterBinding.ensureInitialized();
await FlightRecorder.init(
FRConfig(
redisIngestUrl: "https://telemetry.yourdomain.com/api/v1/report",
apiKey: "your_secret_ingest_key", // Optional API Key
apiKeyHeader: "x-api-key", // Default: 'x-api-key'
flushInterval: const Duration(minutes: 3), // Periodic background timer
maxBufferSize: 100, // Memory cap (entries)
httpTimeout: const Duration(seconds: 5),
appVersion: "1.0.0",
runtimeAttributesProvider: () => {
'user.role': 'premium',
'app.locale': 'en_US',
},
enabled: true,
debug: false,
),
);
runApp(const MyApp());
}
4.2 Logging API #
Standard Breadcrumbs:
// Informational breadcrumb
FlightRecorder.info("Checkout screen opened", source: "CHECKOUT");
// Warning breadcrumb
FlightRecorder.warn("Biometric prompt cancelled by user", source: "AUTH");
// Error with full stack trace capture (capped to top 15 frames)
FlightRecorder.error(
"Payment verification failed",
source: "PAYMENT",
exception: e,
stackTrace: stack,
extra: {'orderId': 'ord_10294'},
);
Network Interception (wrapClient):
Wrap your standard http.Client to automatically log all HTTP calls:
final client = FlightRecorder.wrapClient(http.Client());
final res = await client.get(Uri.parse('https://api.yourdomain.com/v1/items'));
Or manually record HTTP transactions:
FlightRecorder.logHttp(
method: 'POST',
url: 'https://api.yourdomain.com/v1/checkout',
statusCode: 200,
durationMs: 142,
extra: {'cartItems': 3},
);
User & Device Identity Management:
// On User Sign In
FlightRecorder.setUserId(user.id);
// On User Sign Out
FlightRecorder.clearUserId();
// Update Hardware Device Identifier
FlightRecorder.setDeviceId(deviceIdentifier);
Manual Emergency Flush:
// Forces an immediate upload of the current buffer (e.g. before navigating to error screen)
await FlightRecorder.flush(triggerReason: "CRITICAL_FLOW_ERROR");
5. Worst-Case Disaster & Failure Analysis #
| Catastrophic Scenario | Engine Defense Mechanism | App Stability Guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Ingestion Gateway Offline / DNS Blackhole | GzipPusher.push() hits SocketException or connection timeout. All errors are caught in catch (e) { return false; }. |
Zero UI Freeze. No retry storm. Slice is drained to prevent memory growth. |
| 2. Android Keystore Freeze | StorageSnapshotter enforces keystoreTimeout (800ms). |
Returns fallback KEYSTORE_TIMEOUT_800MS. Main isolate never hangs. |
| 3. Memory-Constrained Low-End Android (2 GB RAM) | High-frequency logging (10,000 logs in 30 seconds). Circular ring buffer evicts oldest entries in $O(1)$. | Total memory footprint never exceeds ~80 KB. Zero OOM crash risk. |
| 4. App Force-Closed / Crashed by OS | WidgetsBindingObserver.didChangeAppLifecycleState triggers immediate flush on AppLifecycleState.paused (debounced by 30s). |
Telemetry is dispatched before the OS terminates the process. |
| 5. Developer Logs Sensitive Token in Debug | Developer accidentally executes FlightRecorder.info("Token: $jwt"). |
MaskingEngine regex dictionary scrubs passwords, PINs, and tokens automatically. |
| 6. Airplane Mode / Offline Usage | App is used offline for 5 hours. | Circular buffer retains only the latest 100 entries. Device storage is never polluted. |
