System stats in the Lumide status bar

Features #

  • CPU: usage across all cores, with load averages in the tooltip (Linux and macOS).
  • Memory: percentage used, or used and total; available memory and swap in the tooltip.
  • Disk: free space on the system disk.
  • Network: download and upload rates of the active connection.
  • Battery: level, charging state and time remaining. Hidden on desktops.
  • CPU temperature: from the CPU package sensor, in °C or °F. Fan speed on Macs with fans.
  • Session uptime (off by default): how long Lumide has been running.
  • Alerts: items turn orange or red when CPU, memory, disk, temperature or battery needs attention.
  • Quick menu: click any item to change its style or hide it. The toolbar icon opens every option.
  • Dashboard: live charts and the top processes by CPU and memory.
  • Battery Saver: refreshes every 10 seconds or slower while on battery power.

lumideStats.enableRam true Show memory usage
lumideStats.enableDisk true Show free disk space
lumideStats.enableNetwork true Show network rates
lumideStats.enableBattery true Show the battery (only on machines with one)
lumideStats.enableThermal true Show CPU temperature (only where a sensor is available)
lumideStats.enableUptime false Show the session uptime
lumideStats.compactCpu … compactUptime true Show only the icon and value. Turn off to add a label, e.g. CPU 42% or RAM 8.0 GB / 16 GB
lumideStats.useFahrenheit false Show temperatures in °F
lumideStats.updateIntervalSeconds 2 Refresh interval, 1–60 seconds
lumideStats.batterySaverMode true Refresh every 10 seconds or slower on battery power
lumideStats.priorityBase 1000 Status bar priority. Change it to move the items
lumideStats.showTopBarIcon true Show the System Stats button in the toolbar

Disk space is read at most every 30 seconds and the battery every 15 seconds. Hidden metrics aren't read, except the battery state, which Battery Saver needs.

With compact mode off for CPU and memory, the items read like this:

Platform support #

Metric Linux macOS Windows
CPU /proc/stat Mach host statistics GetSystemTimes
Memory /proc/meminfo Mach VM statistics, sysctl GlobalMemoryStatusEx
Disk statvfs statfs GetDiskFreeSpaceExW
Network /proc/net/dev, /proc/net/route route, interface counters (sysctl) GetIfTable2
Battery /sys/class/power_supply pmset GetSystemPowerStatus
CPU temperature /sys/class/hwmon, /sys/class/thermal SMC (read-only) Not available
Top processes ps ps Not available
  • Windows: CPU temperature is only exposed to administrators, so the item stays hidden.
  • Linux: Lumide doesn't support webviews on Linux yet, so Show Dashboard writes the report to the Output pane instead.
  • Network counts the interface that holds the default route on Linux and macOS. With a VPN, that is usually the VPN interface. On Windows it counts the connected network adapters.

Permissions #

The plugin only reads system information. It doesn't write files, change system settings, or make network requests. plugin.yaml lists what it reads:

  • Files (Linux): /proc/stat, /proc/loadavg, /proc/meminfo, /proc/net/dev, /proc/net/route, and /sys/class/hwmon, /sys/class/thermal, /sys/class/power_supply.
  • Commands: ps (Linux and macOS) only runs while the dashboard is open. On macOS, route runs every 30 seconds to find the default interface, and pmset every 15 seconds when the battery item is shown. df, vm_stat, sysctl and netstat are only run if reading the system libraries fails. On Linux, the status bar items start no processes.
  • System libraries: read through Dart FFI: libc on Linux and macOS, Mach and the SMC on macOS, and kernel32 and iphlpapi on Windows.
