Overview

What is this?

YDB Flutter SDK is a community-driven, production-ready client library for Yandex Database (YDB) - a distributed, fault-tolerant SQL/NoSQL database. This SDK brings YDB support to the Dart and Flutter ecosystem, enabling developers to build mobile, web, and desktop applications with YDB backend.

Why YDB Flutter SDK?

The Problem:

• YDB is a powerful distributed database from Yandex, but lacks official Dart/Flutter support
• Flutter is rapidly growing as the leading cross-platform framework (mobile, web, desktop)
• Building apps with YDB backend requires complex gRPC integration and type conversion
• Yandex Cloud authentication (IAM, Service Accounts) needs special handling
• No ready-to-use solution for Flutter developers wanting to use YDB

What We Solve:

• No Official SDK: Yandex doesn't provide Dart/Flutter SDK - we bridge this gap
• Complex Type Mapping: YDB has 20+ specific types (Int64, Uint64, Decimal, Timestamp, etc.) that don't map directly to Dart - we handle all conversions automatically
• gRPC Complexity: YDB uses gRPC with protobuf - we provide clean, idiomatic Dart API
• Authentication Pain: Yandex Cloud IAM requires OAuth token exchange and Service Account JWT signing - built-in and tested
• Session Management: YDB requires session pooling and lifecycle management - we handle it

Motivation

This project was born from the need to use YDB in Flutter applications. While YDB has excellent Python and Go SDKs, the Dart/Flutter ecosystem was left without official support.

Why This Matters:

1. Yandex Cloud YDB: A production-grade distributed database with strong consistency, ACID transactions, and horizontal scalability
2. The Gap: No way to connect these two powerful technologies

Design Philosophy:

• Follow the Leaders: We closely follow the architecture of official ydb-python-sdk and ydb-go-sdk
• Idiomatic Dart: async/await, Streams, null-safety, proper error handling
• Production First: Built for real-world use from day one - not a proof-of-concept
