Android Setup

1. Permissions

Add the following permissions to your android/app/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml:

<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

    <!-- Required permissions for step counting -->
    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACTIVITY_RECOGNITION" />
    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.POST_NOTIFICATIONS" />
    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.FOREGROUND_SERVICE" />
    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.FOREGROUND_SERVICE_HEALTH" />

    <!-- Auto-start permissions -->
    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED" />

    <application>
        <!-- Your existing application configuration -->

        <!-- Add the background service -->
        <service
            android:name="com.dajiraj.steps_count.BackgroundServiceManager"
            android:enabled="true"
            android:exported="false"
            android:foregroundServiceType="health" />

        <!-- Add boot receiver for auto-start -->
        <receiver android:name="com.dajiraj.steps_count.BootServiceManager"
            android:enabled="true"
            android:exported="true"
            android:directBootAware="true">
            <intent-filter android:priority="1000">
                <action android:name="android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED" />
                <action android:name="android.intent.action.LOCKED_BOOT_COMPLETED" />
                <action android:name="android.intent.action.USER_UNLOCKED" />
                <action android:name="android.intent.action.USER_PRESENT" />
                <action android:name="android.intent.action.MY_PACKAGE_REPLACED" />
                <action android:name="android.intent.action.QUICKBOOT_POWERON" />
                <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
            </intent-filter>
            <intent-filter>
                <action android:name="android.intent.action.MY_PACKAGE_REPLACED" />
                <data android:scheme="package" />
            </intent-filter>
        </receiver>

    </application>
</manifest>

2. Runtime Permissions

Request the ACTIVITY_RECOGNITION and NOTIFICATION permissions at runtime (Android 10+):

import 'package:permission_handler/permission_handler.dart';

Future<bool> requestPermissions() async {
  // Request both permissions
  final Map<Permission, PermissionStatus> statuses = await [
    Permission.activityRecognition,
    Permission.notification,
  ].request();

  final activityStatus = statuses[Permission.activityRecognition]!;
  final notificationStatus = statuses[Permission.notification]!;

  return activityStatus.isGranted && notificationStatus.isGranted;
}

// Check if permissions are already granted
Future<bool> hasPermissions() async {
  final activityStatus = await Permission.activityRecognition.status;
  final notificationStatus = await Permission.notification.status;

  return activityStatus.isGranted && notificationStatus.isGranted;
}

// Handle permanently denied permissions
Future<void> handlePermanentlyDenied() async {
  final activityStatus = await Permission.activityRecognition.status;
  final notificationStatus = await Permission.notification.status;

  if (activityStatus.isPermanentlyDenied ||
      notificationStatus.isPermanentlyDenied) {
    // Guide user to app settings
    await openAppSettings();
  }
}

Basic Setup

import 'package:steps_count/steps_count.dart';

final stepsCount = StepsCount();

Start Background Service

// Start the background step counting service
await stepsCount.startBackgroundService();

// Check if service is running
bool isRunning = await stepsCount.isServiceRunning();
print('Service running: $isRunning');

Get Step Counts

// Get today's step count
int todaySteps = await stepsCount.getTodaysCount();
print('Steps today: $todaySteps');

// Get steps for a specific date range
int weekSteps = await stepsCount.getStepCounts(
  startDate: DateTime.now().subtract(Duration(days: 7)),
  endDate: DateTime.now(),
);
print('Steps this week: $weekSteps');

Timeline Data

// Get detailed timeline with timestamps
List<TimelineModel> timeline = await stepsCount.getTimeline(
  startDate: DateTime.now().subtract(Duration(days: 30)),
  endDate: DateTime.now(),
  timeZone: TimeZoneType.local,
);

for (final entry in timeline) {
  print('${entry.dateTime}: ${entry.stepCount} steps');
}

Stop Service

// Stop the background service
await stepsCount.stopBackgroundService();
