The step the current work runs under, or null outside one.

A zone ends where the request does, so work handed off — a job queued for later, an upload whose storage calls back — starts with no step. Keep this with it (a column on the job's row, the object's metadata) and run the work under inStep, and what it does still joins the tap that caused it.
