effectiveContextWindow function

int effectiveContextWindow(
  1. int contextWindow,
  2. int? cap
)

The effective context window: the owner override (cap, agent.contextWindowCap, issues #273/#729) when configured and positive; a null/non-positive cap leaves the raw window, so uncapped runs behave byte-identically to before. A cap below the catalog window clamps down (owner budget guard); a cap above it RAISES the effective window to the served truth — a resumed branch can legitimately outgrow the catalog entry (cross-model resume, failed end-of-session compaction) when the endpoint actually serves more than the catalog reports. Every consumer of the EFFECTIVE window — the compaction thresholds, the ctx meter/footer, the loop's over-window guard — computes through this (one override point, not one per consumer).

Implementation

int effectiveContextWindow(int contextWindow, int? cap) =>
    cap == null || cap <= 0 ? contextWindow : cap;
