Bloc Bolt ⚡

A minimal, ultra-high-performance event-driven state management extension for the bloc ecosystem.

Bolt bridges the gap between Cubit and Bloc: it provides the strict event-driven contract and full observability of a Bloc, but delivers the raw performance of a Cubit by eliminating inbound StreamController and event-transformer overhead.

  • Cold Start Performance: In shorter runs (10k iterations), Cubit shines because direct method invocations require less initial JIT-compiler optimization than dynamic type matching.
  • The 15-Subscriber Cross: Riverpod's ultra-cheap notification loop catches up with Cubit/Bolt around the 15-subscriber mark. However, for standard Flutter views (typically 1–5 widgets using BlocBuilder per screen), Bolt remains ~10% to 45% faster than Riverpod while running circles around native Bloc.

Architectural Insights: Why the lines cross?

  • Bolt vs Bloc (10x - 2x speedup): By removing the inbound stream queue, Bolt reduces processing latency dramatically. The event is dispatched to onEvent instantly and synchronously.
  • Bolt vs Cubit (The Event-Driven "Tax"): Bolt runs neck-and-neck with Cubit. Modern Dart VM compiles sealed class pattern matching down to highly optimized integer Jump Tables, making the event-driven routing virtually free.
  • The Riverpod Inflection Point: At 15+ subscribers, Riverpod's internal synchronous LinkedList notification loop becomes cheaper than Dart's native StreamController.broadcast(). However, at typical UI scales (1–5 subscribers), Bolt wins by ~45% because it doesn't pay the heavy infrastructure allocation tax (ProviderContainer) required by Riverpod on every lifecycle.
